How to read the result

The percentages are per kitten. They aren't a split of the litter. A pairing that shows one in four blue doesn't mean one blue kitten in a litter of four, it means every kitten has the same one in four chance, and you can get none or all of them.

Where the tool says a parent isn't known to carry something, it has treated that parent as not carrying it. That's the only honest thing to do with an untested cat, and it is also the reason a litter sometimes arrives with a color nobody expected. Chocolate and dilute both hide.

Why there are six patterns and not three

Mitted and bicolor are both white spotting, and a cat carries two copies of the gene. Colorpointed carries none. That gives six combinations rather than three, and each one looks different, which is why a cat's pattern tells you what it carries.

  • Colorpointed with no white, carrying no spotting at all
  • Mitted, one copy of the smaller amount of white
  • High mitted, two copies
  • Bicolor, one copy of the larger amount
  • Mid high white, one of each
  • High white, two copies of the larger amount

Two colorpointed parents can only give colorpointed kittens. Two bicolors give colorpoint, bicolor and high white. Both of those come straight from the GCCF breeding policy chart, and the calculator reproduces them.

Why the sire and the dam are asked separately

Red and cream sit on the X chromosome. A father gives his X to every daughter and none to his sons, so a red father and a non red mother give tortie daughters and not one red son. It's the one part of cat color that doesn't behave like the rest, and it's the part breeders most often get caught by.

Where the rules came from

The pattern inheritance is from the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy Ragdoll breeding policy. The color loci are from the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. Red is X linked, confirmed by the 2025 work identifying the deletion behind orange color in cats. Every rule in the tool is written down with its source in the file behind this page, so you can check any of it.

The tool can't see a gene nobody has tested for. If a color turns up that it didn't predict, one of the parents carries something, and that's worth knowing before the next pairing rather than after it.

Putting a calculator like this on your own site

Look at who comes up when you search for a cat color calculator. Most of them are catteries, not companies. A breeder built a tool, put it on their own site, and now other breeders link to it and Google sends people to it. That's the cheapest way a small cattery gets found by anyone other than a buyer typing its name.

How does a Ragdoll color calculator work?

It takes the color and pattern of both parents, works out which genes each must be carrying, then works through every combination the pairing can produce. What comes back is a probability per kitten.

Can two seal Ragdolls have a blue kitten?

Yes, if both parents carry dilute. Dilute is recessive, so a seal cat can carry it and never show it. Two carriers give a one in four chance per kitten. Chocolate works the same way.

Can two colorpointed parents give a mitted kitten?

No. Neither parent has any white spotting to pass on.

What patterns can a Ragdoll litter have?

Six, because mitted and bicolor are both forms of white spotting and a cat carries two copies. Colorpointed with no white, mitted, high mitted, bicolor, mid high white and high white. Two colorpointed parents can only give colorpointed kittens.

Every rule it applies is listed with its source. It can't account for a gene nobody has tested for, so an untested parent may carry chocolate or dilute and shift the odds.
